As part of the Community Relations Detail, the Ahoskie Police Department provides a unique and vital service to the children of Ahoskie, NC. D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. It is a cooperative effort involving the police department, schools and parents to educate our youth to resist the pressures of drug abuse. The Ahoskie Police Department D.A.R.E. program began in 1988 with one officer teaching part time at R.L. Vann School. Officers currently teach the D.A.R.E. curriculum to 5th graders part-time in county and city schools, reaching over 200 students annually!
D.A.R.E. is unique in that a uniformed officer teaches the lessons. The expertise and experiences of a veteran officer imparts credible information to students who are learning to take a stand against drug abuse. The lessons are built upon the "Three R's":
Recognize when something is wrong, dangerous or against the law.
Resist it by saying "No!" and getting away.
Report the problem to an adult.
"This vehicle seized from a drug dealer"
Aspects of the curriculum are as follows:
The fifth-grade students receive 17 lessons at a time just before they enter the pressures of junior high school. In this way, they are armed with tools necessary to help them resist the peer pressure to experiment with drugs--especially tobacco, alcohol, cocaine, and marijuana. Lessons include, among others: drug awareness and identification, consequences of drug abuse, peer pressure, 8 ways to say "No," developing positive self esteem, refusal skills and good decision making, choosing positive alternatives to drugs and gangs. Students graduate from the semester-long course with a certificate, DARE shirt and other mementos of their participation.
