Transferring From an Agency Outside of NC:

Out-of-state transferees need to be evaluated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission to determine the amount and quality of their training and experience. Out-of-state transferees cannot have a break in service exceeding one year. At a minimum, to be considered for transfer to a North Carolina law enforcement agency, out-of-state candidates must have two years of full-time, sworn law enforcement experience and have successfully completed a basic law enforcement training course accredited by the state from which they are transferring.

Prior to employment as a certified law enforcement officer in North Carolina, out-of-state transferees must successfully complete the employing agency's in-service firearms training and qualification program. They must also complete the Legal Unit (minimum of 96 hours) of the Commission-accredited BLET and successfully pass the entire state comprehensive examination within their 12-month probationary period.

Persons who have completed training as a federal law enforcement officer or a military police officer will be required to complete the Commission-accredited BLET in its entirety and successfully pass the state comprehensive examination prior to employment.

The Hiring Process

The first step in the hiring process is to contact Major Jimmy Asbell at (252) 332-5012 or in person to obtain and complete the North Carolina F-3 personal history statement.

Upon completion and return of the F-3 form an extensive background investigation will be conducted.

Candidates who qualify after the background investigation will be called in by the Chief of Police for an initial interview.

Applicants approved by the Chief of Police will then be scheduled for an oral board interview which lasts approximately one hour.

If applicant is approved by the oral board committee the applicant will be placed on an "eligibility list" which is maintained by the Chief of Police. A conditional offer of employment will be made to applicants on the eligibility list following a final personal interview with the Chief of Police. This of course, depending upon position vacancy.
